The BMW Active Hybrid 3 is a unique car by every means and surprisingly would be the fastest model released in the 3-Series range outside of the M-Division cars. The Hybrid 3 utilises the turbocharged 3-litre inline six-cylinder N55 engine seen in the 335i paired with a 40kw electric motor giving this model an impressive combined output of 250kw and a 0-100 time of only 5.3 seconds. Due to the benefit of the hybrid system and it's elimination of turbo-lag the Active 3 uses a quoted combined fuel consumption of only 5.9L/100km, and impressive economy figure for such a quick vehicle. The Hybrid 3 has an array of features not expected for a car of its era including a highway ‘coasting’ function, which shuts off the engine and de-clutches it from the transmission for a silent and zero-emission drive on the highway.
