The Torana was produced between 1967 and 1980 as the mid size sedan option into the Holden range. Only three generations would be produced, with numerous updates and facelifts throughout these generations. Holden had been developing a V8 option for the Torana for some time prior to the release in 1974 for the LH Torana SL/R 5000. However, this additional V8 power and weight came at a loss for the brakes and handling, not deterring Aussie buyers in any way from picking up these race car inspired and eye catching street machines. The SL/R was unmistakable from any distance, wider wheels, flared wheel arches, large spoiler, bright colours and special decals caught your eye if you hadn't already heard the V8 rumble.
This 1974 LH Torana has been restored and modified to replicate an SL/R 5000 of the same generation, with some additional modifications to individualise the car. This example is unmissable, with the exterior finished in a eye catching full body Chrome Yellow with black decals, wide 14" Cheviot hotwires with white tyre written classic radial tyres, ducktail spoiler, guard flares, dual exit exhaust, K-Mac front & rear sway bars, with the full underside of the car also being painted in black. Body and paintwork completed by Merv Hardimon of Classic Auto Refinishing (Newcastle, NSW), a restorer with over 40 years of experience and international award recognition including Pebble Beach and Villa d’Este.
The interior is mostly complete with new carpet, classic style Recaro front bucket seats, custom door trims, custom roulette headliner, Alpine audio system, SAAS steering wheel, centre console with integrated gauges and more.
Importantly the powertrain is also where this eye catching example delivers. A refreshed 5.0L GMH 308ci V8 has been fitted and with a stage 4 camshaft, Edelbrock air filter, black alloy radiator and much more. This is backed by a overhauled M21 4-speed manual, and a Salisbury differential also refreshed with new seals. A V8 tailshaft has been fitted, and the entire cars wiring harness was replaced by a qualified auto electrician. Brakes were also upgraded with new or restored parts, new lines and a new master cylinder.
This is an eye catching example of a SL/R 5000 replica and would make an ideal weekend toy and club run / show car.
