Starting in 2016 with the release of the 982 generation, Porsche resurrected the historic 718 designation - which was previously used on successful Le Mans racers, for its mid-engine Boxster and Cayman lineup, shifting from naturally aspirated flat-sixes to punchy, turbo flat-four engines in base and S models. Porsche decided to end the mid engine lineup in 2025 in favour of electric only vehicle making this the last generation of internal combustion Caymans to roll of the line.
