Extremely rare running and driving Vanguard Phase II Diesel Sedan!

The Standard Vanguard is a car produced by the Standard Motor Company in Coventry, England, from 1947 until 1963. Designed in 1945, it was Standard Motor Company's first post world war II car and was intended for export around the world. The name Vanguard was derived from the name of the last of the Royal Navy's battleships "HMS Vanguard" and permission to use the name involved Standard Motor Company in extensive negotiations with senior Royal Navy personnel. From March 1954 Standard became the first British car maker to offer a diesel as a factory fitted option. Like the petrol engine, the diesel was a standard built "20C" engine developed for the Ferguson tractor. The diesels fitted to the tractor were restricted to 2200 rpm and developed 25 horsepower (19 kW), but road-going engines in Vanguards had no limiter and so produced 60 horsepower (45 kW) at 3800 rpm. In 1955 the Phase II was replaced by the monocoque Vanguard Phase III.
This particular example presents very well. Powered by the 2088cc diesel and backed by a 3 speed column shift manual the car runs and drives beautifully. It has undergone sympathetic restoration over the years but presents almost entirely original. The body is in good condition with the exception of one small bubble of rust under the paint on the rear left quarter and the interior and drive line present extremely well.
